Jimmy Bruen Shield
History was made in Castlerock Golf Club over the weekend
when Claremorris Golf Club
became the first ever Mayo Club to win the Jimmy Bruen
Shield.
In fact, since the competition was inaugurated in 1978, only
one
won the Shield, Galway Golf Club being victorious in 1980
and 81.
Over four hundred clubs set out last May throughout the
country with their sights set on
winning the prestigious award, however, at the end of the
day Claremorris now sit
proudly on top of the pile.
The adventure began on May 9th when Claremorris defeated
Westport Golf Club in the
first round and continued with the defeat of
Loughrea Golf Club.
Claremorris met Faithlegg Golf Club,
last and after a great match they edged through on a 3/2
scoreline.
They then met Forrest Little,
players on their panel who had represented
The final was tight throughout with the advantage ebbing and
flowing in the direction of
one side then the other.
Eventually it came down to match number four in which the
team Captain Ger Noone
was partnered by Martin Higgins. The Claremorris pairing rose
to the challenge when
Noone slotted the putt on the seventeenth green to give
Claremorris the half they needed
to win on a 2/1 margin.
One will never forget the scenes of delight that unfolded as
the Claremorris following
gave full vent to their delight at the win.
Afterwards, in the clubhouse, Eugene Fayne, the President of
the GUI presented the
pennant to the Claremorris team Captain Ger Noone, who in
turn presented it to James
Prendergast, Claremorris Club Captain.
Later on that evening the team and supporters received a
great welcome when they
arrived back at the clubhouse with the famous Shield.
Amongst those to speak were
Captain, Dympna Clarke, Lady Captain, and of course Ger
Noone who thanked everyone
for their support. He complimented the members of his team
and thanked them for their
huge commitment the year.

Congratulations to Shane McGagh (Claremorris) on winning the Leinster Under 15 Boys Open Championship at Beaverstown on Independence Day.
Shane McGagh (Claremorris) shot a splendid two over par 74 to wins the Leinster Boys Under 15 Open Championship at Beaverstown today, Mon 4th July. Two nines of 37 were sufficient to see him take the title by a one stroke margin over Tommy O'Driscoll (Ring of Kerry) and Eoin Leonard (Wentworth) who both shot 75.
This year's event was once again kindly sponsored by Multi Cargo Ltd. (Dublin Airport).
219 boys applied to play, with the handicap cut for the top 150 coming in at a record low of 13.8.
