History

A short outline on the history of Claremorris Golf Club.

Early records indicate golf having been played at what we know as the Race Course in 1917 by the British Army as Ireland was still then a part of the British Empire. After they left it is not clear if golf continued at this site.

In any event a few years later more suitable ground was found at Castlemacgarret for a 9 hole course on the estate of Lord Oranmore and Browne (born 21st October 1901) and was rented from him. This estate had been in the Browne family for over 800 years.

The club was then known as Castlemacgarrett Golf Club and lists its foundation as 1927 with affiliation to the GUI in the same year. The first Captain of the club was a Mr T Cowan.

The club continued to rent the land from Lord Oranmore and Browne until 1962

when the Land Commission took over his estate. The club decided to buy the course and with the help of local business people Claremorris Development Company was established to purchase the grounds on the clubs behalf for the sum of £2,500.00.

Lord Oranmore and Browne eventually moved to London where he died 7th August 2002 aged 100 years.

In 1986 a new clubhouse was built to cater for the growing number of members.

It has panoramic views of the course and has all the facilities a modern clubhouse should.

In 1996 a decision was taken by the then committee to extend the course to 18 holes. Local landowners were approached and enough land was purchased for the additional 9 holes. The services of renowned course architect the late Mr Tom Craddock were engaged to redesign the entire course and with his guiding hand is now a spectacular par 73 layout with well bunkered undulating fairways and USGA spec sand based greens presented to the highest standard to test even the best golfers.

Thetranquil setting with mature Ash, Oak and Elm trees a feature and views of the distant Partry mountains make Claremorris Golf Club a piece of heaven and a reminder of the slower pace of life in days gone by.

Through the hard work of members past and present the club now has in excess of 800 members and a club to be proud of.
